The court ruled that there is no need for a fresh election since only two candidates were in the fray. The apex court directed that the rival candidate, Rama Devi Rautray, be declared the winner. This decision overturns the earlier judgment of the Odisha High Court, which had dismissed the petitions. The case dates back to the 2022 election, where Basanti Sahu had won with 12 votes against Rama Devi’s 9 votes. However, her election was challenged on the grounds of having more than two children, leading to disqualification. While the election tribunal had declared Rama Devi as the winner, later developments led to confusion over re-election, which has now been clarified by the Supreme Court. This landmark judgment is expected to have important implications for local body elections and legal interpretations in similar cases. #SupremeCourt #OdishaNews #Puri #ElectionVerdict #BreakingNews Kanak News is Odisha's leading 24x7 news and current affairs TV channel from Eastern Media Limited.
