Your morning took an entire night to build. The bread is fresh. The streets are clean. The first train arrives. Before your alarm rings, someone has already worked through the night to make your day feel ordinary. The City Runs on Lost Sleep follows that morning backward: from bakery ovens and delivery trucks to railway maintenance, hospital handovers, and the workers trying to get home as everyone else heads out. We explore why so much essential work happens overnight, why eight hours away from work doesn't always mean eight hours of rest, and what it means to live in a city that runs on a different clock from your own. Some people choose the night shift. That doesn't make quiet sleep, reliable transport, or a proper break any less important. Have you worked nights? What do people who work during the day misunderstand about your routine? Share your experience in the comments. Subscribe for more illustrated explainers about the systems and people behind everyday life.
