Why are so many teams moving to containers, and does that mean virtual machines are going away? This lesson walks the path from bare metal to VMs to containers and explains where each one fits. We start with the pre-virtualization hardware problem, then revisit how virtual machines abstract hardware through the hypervisor. From there we look at the container evolution, where the OS itself is abstracted with a shared kernel, OS-level virtualization, millisecond startup, and high density. We do a head-to-head architectural comparison of VMs and containers, talk through how workload dictates choice, and close with the mental shift to disposable infrastructure, container images, and immutable deployments. In this lesson: The hardware problem that started it all How VMs abstract hardware How containers abstract the operating system VMs vs containers: architecture and trade-offs Disposable infrastructure and container images Chapters: 0:00 Intro 0:33 Why Move to Containers? 1:06 What We'll Cover 1:23 The Hardware Problem: Pre-Virtualization 2:17 Virtual Machines: Abstracting Hardware 4:32 Container Evolution: Abstracting the OS 6:17 VMs vs Containers: Architectural Comparison 7:46 When to Use Which 9:04 The Mental Shift: Disposable Infrastructure 11:21 Recap and Key Takeaways 12:11 Final Thought: The Next Abstraction Layer This is part 22 of 32 in the Virtualization Fundamentals series.
