What If Tommy's Mother Never Drowned?

Small Heath, around 1900. A canal runs behind Watery Lane, thick with oil and the smell of tar, deep enough and dark enough that it never fully freezes. A Romani woman carrying an unnamed sadness walks the towpath one morning and does not come back. Her son Tommy is about ten years old. He is the one, the family's silence implies, who was standing there when the men came with poles. No funeral is ever shown. No photograph of her hangs in any Shelby house. In a show that films every other death in careful, unhurried detail, the first death is never filmed at all. It survives only as fragments Polly half-speaks and nobody finishes: a woman not right in herself, a family thing that goes into the water, a warning that it will take one of them before it's done. Arthur Shelby senior leaves not long after. Twenty-something Polly is left to raise five children alone on Watery Lane, the same street, the same stretch of canal, morning after morning for the rest of Tommy's childhood. The thesis: Tommy Shelby's coldness was not made in the tunnels under the Somme. France finished a job the canal had already started. A boy who watched a body pulled onto the bricks at ten did not need the war to learn that the world takes without asking — he needed it to confirm what he already knew. So the video asks what happens if that morning goes differently. If the shawl stays folded on the bank and the woman who wore it walks back into the house instead of into the water. If Arthur senior has a reason to stay. If Polly gets to be an aunt instead of a mother by necessity. Every ledger Tommy keeps later, every account he settles by finding the man responsible and making him pay, runs on a method built to answer the one debt that has no name attached to it — hers. Remove the debt, and the method may never get built at all.
