BEING A PASTOR IS HARDER THAN BEING A DOCTOR | Dag Heward-Mills

Bishop Dag Heward-Mills teaches from Matthew 16:18 that Jesus has only one project: 'Thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church.' He uses the vivid analogy of a hospital administrator who abandons health care to build cafeterias, comparing this to pastors who pursue every project except the actual building of the church. He declares that building a church is the most difficult thing a minister can decide to do, and that it is far easier to travel around preaching as an invited evangelist than to sit down in one place and build a church. Drawing from his own experience as both a medical doctor since 1989 and a pastor, Bishop Dag makes the bold claim that pastoral ministry is harder than practising medicine. He gives two reasons: a doctor simply sites a clinic and the sick come to him, but a pastor must go out to town and bring the members in; and a doctor deals with the visible human body that you can hold and see, but a pastor deals with the invisible spirits and souls of men. He charges every minister to focus on the one thing Jesus said He would build.
