cooking for a comforting way to turn prepared moong dal and vegetables into sambhar? 🍲🌿 Join Veggie Food Culture for my homemade version, finished with coconut, a little mint, and fresh coriander.
Follow the seasoning, add the dal and vegetables, bring everything to a boil, adjust the consistency, and finish with garnish. This is my personal home recipe, with ajwain and mint as my own additions. ✨
INGREDIENTS SHOWN 🥣
• Prepared yellow moong dal and mixed vegetables
• Oil and chopped onion
• Cumin seeds and split urad dal
• Ginger-garlic paste (optional) and asafoetida / hing
• Curry leaves, Kashmiri red chilli, turmeric and ajwain
• Tamarind and sambhar masala
• Water
• Desiccated coconut, or freshly grated coconut
• Mint leaves, paprika or Kashmiri chilli powder, and fresh coriander / cilantro
COOKING NOTES 👩🍳
The video begins with dal and vegetables that have already been pressure-cooked; their initial preparation is not shown. The presenter later explains that the dal was only partly cooked, so allow enough simmering time for your lentils to become fully soft. Total cooking time depends on that starting point. Adjust the masala, chilli and water to your taste. The spoon, bowl and glass measures shown are household measures; exact standardized quantities are not supplied.
SERVING IDEAS 🍚
Enjoy with rice, idli, roti, naan or bread—or serve a bowl soup-style.
🤔 How do you like your sambhar: thick and hearty, or a little more soupy? What would you serve it with? Tell me in the comments!
