If your child is struggling to read, you may have been told they are “behind” or simply need more practice.
For many parents, that still leaves one big question: what exactly is making reading difficult for them?
In this video, I share the story of one of our students, who I’ll call Noah. When he first came to us, he knew some letters and sounds, but he was still struggling to read independently and would often hesitate or guess when he came across unfamiliar words.
We looked more closely at how he was approaching reading and identified specific skills that needed strengthening, including phonemic awareness, blending sounds and decoding words.
From there, we built a structured plan around the foundations he was ready to develop and tracked his progress along the way. A few sessions later, his mum started noticing changes outside of tutoring, and after five weeks we reassessed his reading using the same measure we had used at the beginning.
I share what changed, what his progress looked like, and why the way we approached his reading difficulties mattered.
If your child knows some letter sounds but still guesses words, struggles to blend sounds, avoids reading, or lacks confidence with unfamiliar words, watch the full video to see the questions I would encourage parents to start asking.
