The Walland to Wears Valley drive of the Foothills Parkway is ideal for first-time visitors seeking breathtaking mountain views, multiple scenic pull-offs, and a peaceful drive without the congestion of more popular park roads. It is a flexible route that can be enjoyed in a few hours, with opportunities to stop at overlooks, enjoy short hikes, or simply take in the panoramic vistas of the Great Smoky Mountains This section of the Foothills Parkway climbs to nearly 2,500 feet near Caylor Gap and was completed in 2018, filling the long-awaited “missing link” of the parkway. The road winds along the southern slopes of the mountains, connecting Grassy Mountain, Rocky Mountain, and Davis Mountain, with smooth curves, viaducts, and minimal traffic. On the drive, the late summer sun hung low over Walland, warm and honey colored, when we eased the car onto the Foothills Parkway. The road climbed gently at first, curling through quiet woods where the light flickered between branches like a slow heartbeat. The air smelled faintly of pine and warm pavement — that unmistakable Smokies scent that feels like coming home. As the elevation rose, the trees opened into overlooks that seemed almost too wide for the world. The mountains rolled out in blue green waves, each ridge softer than the last, fading into the hazy gold of evening. Jeff slowed the car, letting the moment breathe. A hawk drifted above the valley, wings catching the last bright edge of the sun. At one overlook, Sharon stepped out of the car. The breeze was cool now, carrying the faint sound of cicadas warming up for their nightly chorus. The sun hovered just above the ridgeline, a molten coin slipping toward the edge of the world. Shadows stretched long across the valley floor, and the mountains glowed as if lit from within. The Parkway curved along the spine of the hills, offering new angles with every turn — glimpses of distant farms, pockets of shadowed forest, and the long sweep of Wears Valley stretching toward the horizon. The sky shifted from gold to apricot, then to a deepening rose. It felt like driving through a painting that kept repainting itself. The final miles toward Wears Valley felt like a gentle descent into twilight. Porch lights flickered on in the distance. The sky deepened to lavender. The Parkway straightened, guiding us toward the quiet charm of the valley — a place where cabins tucked into the hills promised rest, and the night air always felt a little sweeter. By the time we reached Wears Valley, the last light had faded, leaving only the soft blue of evening and the memory of a drive that felt like a whispered secret from the mountains themselves.
