The Fermi paradox, explained: our galaxy is old and packed with planets, so where is everybody? From a lunch at Los Alamos in 1950 to the Wow! signal, Tabby's Star and 'Oumuamua, plus every serious answer, from the Great Filter to the Zoo hypothesis. If even one species started spreading through the galaxy long ago, it should have reached us by now, and we see no one. In this video: how a joke over lunch became a real scientific puzzle, the simple math that makes the silence strange, the Drake equation, every signal we've actually sent and heard (Project Ozma, the Arecibo message, the Wow! signal), the odd objects that briefly looked like alien technology, and how little of the sky we've really searched. Then the leading answers (Rare Earth, the Great Filter, the Zoo hypothesis, the Dark Forest, "we're just early") and what the James Webb Space Telescope could tell us next.
