7 Eyewear Brands That Are All One Company (And the 5 That Aren't)
Seven eyewear brands that look like rivals are owned by one company — EssilorLuxottica — and five genuinely independent houses have stayed out of it. This is the story of how the world's largest eyewear group was built, told through the one man who refused its terms and lost.
In 2001, Luxottica bought Sunglass Hut and told its suppliers to cut wholesale prices. Oakley founder Jim Jannard said no. He was right about his leverage and it didn't matter. Six years later, Luxottica owned Oakley for $2.1 billion.
We trace the ownership behind Ray-Ban, Oakley, Persol, Oliver Peoples, Arnette, Costa Del Mar and Prada, plus the licensing deals behind Chanel, Armani, Burberry and Tiffany — and the retail chains, lens brands and vision insurance that sit underneath all of it.
Then the other side: Randolph Engineering, Moscot, Barton Perreira, Jacques Marie Mage and Warby Parker, and the one structural decision that kept each of them independent.
This isn't an argument about quality. It's an argument about what you think you're choosing when you choose.
