On Saturday morning Mom announces the fire drill. First they draw a map of the house on the back of a calendar, and Avery goes room to room finding two ways out of every one. Then they pick a meeting place outside - and it has to be a real thing you can find in the dark. Theirs is the mailbox. Gus, who cannot be hurried for anything, turns out to be the fastest person in the house at this, and celebrates on the grass with laps of the mailbox and a bow. Avery is slow every single time, because every single time she goes back past Gus's door to check. What children find out: two ways out of every room, one meeting place outside, and you never, ever go back in. A grown-up comes for each child - and if someone isn't at the meeting place, you tell a grown-up, and the firefighters do the rest.
