Why do Britain, Japan, Australia and dozens of other countries drive on the left? Follow the map to discover how inherited rules, empires, neighbours and car markets shaped the roads we use today. Map Mischief visits 195 countries across nine regions: 54 keep left and 141 keep right. The counting convention is the 193 UN member states plus the State of Palestine and the Holy See. Hong Kong, Macao and the US Virgin Islands appear separately and do not add to the country count. Facts researched as of 25 October 2026. “Left” and “right” describe normal public-road traffic in the main national system, not steering-wheel position, railways or every individual lane. This is a reference-based overview, not a country-by-country legal audit. Historical origins differ; a British connection does not explain every case.
