In this powerful case, the tragic story of Arlina Addison is brought to light. What was supposed to be a routine cervical epidural steroid injection left her with permanent brain damage, cognitive impairment, and a lifetime of disability.
On June 9, 2022 Arlina arrived at Piedmont’s OrthoAtlanta, for what should have been a simple CESI outpatient (10-minute) procedure, Arlina was sedated to the point of unresponsiveness and injected into her CSF without critical imaging safeguards. Within seconds, she experienced decerebrate posturing, loss of bladder control, facial drooping, and an inability to follow commands. By the time she reached the emergency room, it was too late, due to Piedmont's OrthoAtlanta delay in calling 911
This video outlines the steps of the procedure, the ignored safety measures, and the catastrophic injury that followed, raising serious questions about medical oversight, accountability, and patient protection in a routine outpatient procedure.
Even the defendants’ own expert, Dr. Fitz Harper, agreed that he didn’t see any contrast in the one film. He further confirmed that since 2021, Medicare’s Local Coverage Determination (LCD) has mandated a minimum of two views, including contrast injection, for final needle placement, and both an AP and lateral or oblique view. Dr. Harper also pointed out that Dr. Lee documented “Dexamethasone 10 mL IV”, which he questioned as possibly a misprint, stating that you wouldn’t want to inject that into the bloodstream. He also noticed that Dr. Lee incorrectly documented the procedure as occurring at C6-C7, instead of the correct level C7-T1.
This is a powerful example of turning the defense’s expert into your expert.
⚖️ This lawsuit, brought by Arlina Addison and her legal team, seeks justice and demands change, holding doctors accountable for ignoring long-standing safety guidelines, including Medicare’s 2021 requirement for two imaging views and contrast during these minimal risk procedures.
