"For a long time, I lived thinking, 'It's my father's fault.'"
These are the words I read aloud to my father — in the letter I gave at my wedding. In Japan, a bride reads a letter to her parents on her wedding day, usually to say thank you. I chose to say something else first.
My father is a quiet, serious man. Growing up, our conversations were almost only about grades and test rankings. Somewhere along the way, "be proper" and "numbers = my worth" became the rules I lived by — and they bound me for thirty years: through 100 job rejections, a career I didn't really choose, and years I couldn't be kind to myself.
This video is about how I stopped blaming him, and what finally set me free. It wasn't my father changing, and it wasn't attacking him. It was learning to accept myself — the good parts, and the bad. It took a very long time, but I was able to forgive both my father, and myself.
If you grew up bound by someone else's words or values, I hope this reaches you.
