December 21, 1980. Four days before Christmas.
An heiress was found face down on the marble floor of a bathroom in Newport, Rhode Island. She never opened her eyes again — not that day, not that year, not for the rest of her life.
Her name was Sunny von Bülow. Her husband, Claus, would be tried twice for trying to kill her: convicted in 1982, acquitted in 1985. Jeremy Irons won an Oscar playing him. She was still alive when the film opened. She would live another eighteen years.
For nearly three decades, fresh flowers kept arriving in a guarded hospital room she could not see. This is not the story of the trial. It is the story of the woman inside it — and of who never stopped visiting.
