When Henry Clay Frick died in 1919, he left his daughter Helen $38 million and made her the wealthiest unmarried woman in the United States. She never really spent it on herself. For more than 60 years she poured that fortune into a single obsession: controlling what the world was allowed to say about her dead father. She froze his Pittsburgh house exactly as he had left it, built a library to hold more than a million images against forgetting, and in 1964, at the age of 76, she dragged a state historian into court to stop him printing three short passages about Frick and the Homestead strike. She was still living inside that frozen house when she died there in 1984, at 96. The one thing all her money could never buy was the last word on her father.
