TUPAC TO PIMP C: WHAT DID WE MISS? | TO KILL A RAPPER What happens when you stop looking at Tupac and Pimp C as two separate stories and start following the connections between them? In this episode of TO KILL A RAPPER, we follow a trail that stretches from Tupac and the East Coast/West Coast era to Queensbridge, Mobb Deep, Jay-Z, UGK, Beyoncé, Houston, Rap-A-Lot and the rise of Southern hip-hop. Pimp C had enormous respect for Tupac. Years later, when Jay-Z wanted UGK for “Big Pimpin’,” Bun B recalled that Pimp’s feelings about Tupac were actually part of the conversation. That gives us a starting point to examine how these different worlds began crossing paths. We follow UGK from Texas into the New York music industry, Pimp C’s complicated feelings about “Big Pimpin’,” and the relationship that developed between UGK and Jay-Z. Then Beyoncé enters the story. We examine the known collaborations and studio connections involving Beyoncé, Jay-Z, Bun B and Pimp C, while going further back to ask when these Houston music circles may have first crossed paths. From there, we return to Houston. We examine Rap-A-Lot, J. Prince, the federal investigations surrounding that world, Pimp C’s imprisonment, the FREE PIMP C movement and the man who came home with seemingly no desire to keep quiet. Pimp spoke openly about Southern unity, record deals, money, fake gangster images, the music industry and things he believed other artists were afraid to discuss. Then came December 2007. Pimp C was found dead inside a Los Angeles hotel room. His death was officially attributed to the combined effects of promethazine/codeine and sleep apnea. But that official conclusion didn't stop the questions. We compare the documented record with later interviews, statements from people around Pimp C, conflicting stories and theories that have continued to circulate since his death. And then we bring everything back to Tupac. Tupac. Mobb Deep. Queensbridge. Jay-Z. Beyoncé. UGK. Rap-A-Lot. Houston. Pimp C. Are we looking at one connected story? Or are we looking at separate events that only appear connected when viewed years later? This documentary isn't about presenting speculation as fact. We're putting the interviews, timelines, documented connections and unanswered questions beside each other and letting YOU examine the evidence. Sometimes the story isn't hidden. Sometimes nobody thought to put all the pieces on the same table. TO KILL A RAPPER: TUPAC TO PIMP C — WHAT DID WE MISS?
