It has been the permanent host of the World Internet Conference since 2014, and it is the birthplace of the writer Mao Dun. This walk stays inside Xizha (西栅), the western scenic zone: rebuilt and reopened in 2007, it stretches for roughly 1.8 kilometres of canal frontage, a chain of small islets joined by arched stone bridges, with tea houses, workshops and inns standing right on the water. After dark the whole quarter is lit — lanterns under the eaves, lit facades and bridge arches, every light doubled in the black surface of the canal.
