Ustad Imrat Khan (surbahar) - 1982 - Darbari Kanada (alap only) - 1 hour

Ustad Imrat Khan belongs to the Imdadkhani gharana (his grandfather was Ustad Imdad Khan) and is the brother of Ustad Vilayat Khan. Here he performs a slow and methodical unfolding of Darbari Kannada for nearly an hour on surbahar. Traditionally, Darbari Kannada was only performed as alap or in vilambit (slow tempo), with the drut (faster) portion performed in a sister raga, usually Adana. Darbari and Adana share the same scale, but in Darbari, more time is spent on the lower notes while in Adana, more time is spent on the upper notes.
