He Walked Into the Dark Looking for an Enemy. He Found Somebody Instead.

He needs another male lion to stay alive. And another male lion is the most likely thing to kill him. Moto is two and a half years old and eighty-four days on his own. He has not won one thing. Researchers in the Serengeti watched twenty-nine males try to take territory alone. It worked once. So he starts calling into the dark. On the ninth night, something answers — and it is not a pride. One voice. One male, on his own, doing exactly what Moto is doing. Of every hundred wounds on a grown male lion, eighty-eight came from another lion. Not from buffalo. Not from hyenas. From other lions. Part 4 of The Story of Moto.
