48 Hours in Rome | Our First Time in Rome!

After checking in, we head straight into the city and walk to the Colosseum, stopping for some delicious focaccia and an incredible cannoli along the way. We spend around three hours exploring the Colosseum, including the exhibition inside. If you're planning a visit, we highly recommend booking your Colosseum tickets in advance through the official website to avoid long queues and unofficial ticket sellers. That evening, we return to the Colosseum by metro before walking through Piazza Navona, across Ponte Sant'Angelo, past Castel Sant'Angelo, and into Vatican City. Our first night in Rome ends at St. Peter's Square, which was surprisingly quiet and peaceful late at night. DAY 2 — COLOSSEUM, ROMAN FORUM & ANCIENT ROME For the second day of our Rome itinerary, we get up early and return to the Colosseum at around 7:30 AM. Arriving early was absolutely worth it, as there were barely any people around. We then explore the Roman Forum, which is included with our Colosseum ticket. We spend another three hours discovering the ruins of Ancient Rome and highly recommend visiting early in the morning if you want to avoid the biggest crowds. Next, we visit the Museo della Forma Urbis, a lesser-known Rome museum displaying fragments of an ancient marble map of the city. After experiencing a spring storm, we continue sightseeing around the Victor Emmanuel II Monument, Piazza Venezia and Piazza del Campidoglio, famous for its Michelangelo-designed architecture. We finish the day exploring Rome's main shopping streets, visiting the impressive Apple Store and discovering Zara's famous custom Porsche before finding a surprisingly good local restaurant for dinner. DAY 3 — VATICAN MUSEUMS & ST. PETER'S BASILICA For our final full day in Rome, we start with breakfast before heading back to Vatican City. The Vatican Museums are one of the must-see attractions in Rome, but booking tickets in advance is essential if you want to avoid spending hours in line. We explore the incredible collections, spending most of our time in the Gallery of Maps, before reaching the Sistine Chapel. After a quick lunch break, we return to St. Peter's Basilica. Entry to the basilica is free, but we also decide to visit the rooftop for one of the best views of Rome. The climb includes some extremely narrow passages, but the panoramic views from the top are absolutely worth it. We return to the basilica during golden hour, when the light makes the entire place look incredible. For our final night, we enjoy one last Italian dinner before taking a late-night walk through central Rome. We visit the Pantheon and Trevi Fountain, arriving around 11 PM when the crowds were surprisingly manageable. DEPARTURE — 48 HOURS IN ROME The next morning, we head back toward the airport, stopping at a local food market to grab some Italian food for the journey. After spending just 48 hours in Rome, we quickly realized that two days is nowhere near enough to see everything this city has to offer. There are still countless Rome attractions, museums, historic sites, restaurants and neighborhoods we didn't have time to explore.
