That will be twenty-two fifty. No, I don’t have change for a hundred. Alright, fine, I suppose I can take it in coins. Just make it fast. I’ve got to deal with that kid next. Hey, you, I told you to quit messing up those shelves; I just stocked them- Oh, suck it, huh? Well, fu… really can’t say that anymore. Palpatine groans and bites back the rest. That little Nautolan boy has become the bane of his existence. Since his mother started shopping here, he has been nothing but trouble, messing up shelves, opening snacks, and cussing him out. The former senator wants nothing more than to cuss him right back. He has quite a few choice words that would leave the boy a sobbing mess. He tried as much a couple of days ago, but Grimo was quite clear: no cussing out the customers. He’s free to do it under his breath, but never to their faces. Especially not the son of a woman who buys all her groceries here. So Palpatine sinks back, watching as the half-blind Weequay begins to stack coins on the counter, mumbling to herself, while that little brat takes this as permission to continue terrorizing the candy aisle. Taking a look around and making sure that the Weequay is focused on her coin purse, Palpatine excuses himself to head towards the kid. While moving, his head swivels back and forth to see if the camera or the grimy security mirror is watching; he shuffles forward, and while the Nautolan is turned, he presses his foot against him and shoves forward. The boy cries out as he stumbles into the rack, spilling candy all over himself. Palpatine: Clean up on aisle four! A second later, his mother comes running up to him, helping him to his feet, but also berating him for the mess he made. She offers her apologies, and Grimo steps out to see what the commotion is about. Seeing the fallen child, the spilled merchandise, and the mother, the Sullustan sighs and takes over, talking to her about compensation. When Palpatine returns to the register, the woman has at last found enough money to pay him, and takes her groceries to go. This leaves Palpatine free to watch his overworked, teenage, part-time coworker sweep up gummy bears off the floor. Altogether, not the worst outcome. He chuckles to himself, one of the rare chuckles he has managed since being trapped in this hideous body and being forced to go into hiding. What’s worse is that he cannot even return to Mas Amedda’s home, since the Vice Chair banished him. Grimo didn’t even question Palpatine’s sudden change in appearance, only asking if it was caused by Doctor Yib Yib. The only kindness Mas gave him was to talk Grimo into letting Palpatine rent the run-down room above the store for a modest fee. Mas had even covered the first year of rent, simply because it gives him the opportunity to watch Palpatine suffer. And suffer he does, as Grimo walks up to Palpatine and hands him a mop. Grimo: The bathroom needs cleaning. Palpatine: W-what? Me? But I’m on the register? Grimo: And I don’t see any customers here, so if you have time to lean, you have time to clean. Palpatine: But why me? Why can’t you get Krill to do it? Grimo: Because Krill is sweeping up the mess that kid made; now go. I’m not asking again. Palpatine looks at the mop being offered up to him and then at Grimo, wondering if he could get away with murdering him. He decides that the pennies the owner is paying him are enough to spare his life. Sighing, he takes the mop and begins to clean up the bathroom. As expected, the floor is covered with water, used tissues, and multiple suspicious liquids. He is sure to breathe through his mouth while he works, muttering unhappily to himself as a shadow looms up from behind. Palpatine: Look, buddy. I just spent the last half an hour mopping Lucas knows what from these floors, and I’m not about to have you making a mess of things again. I don’t care how much you have to go; why don’t you go to the clinic next door? The Gungan doctor there is very… Darth Bane: I assure you, I certainly need to go. Now I hope you will please stand aside before things get messy, gramps. #starwars #starwarswhatif #whatif
