A three-year-old electric car costs $21,500. The same car new costs $42,000. Everyone says the used one is the obvious win — and on the surface, the math agrees by about $16,000. Then one line on the battery report quietly changes the answer. In this video we run the full cost of ownership on two identical EVs — same model, same pack, same mileage — held for the same five years. Not the sticker price. Depreciation, interest, insurance, maintenance, and the one cost nobody puts in the ad: the pack. What we cover0:00 Two cars, one battery, $20,000 apart1:04 The two cars and the rules (warranty, state of health, the 70% floor)2:07 The math everyone runs (depreciation, and why energy cost cancels out)3:10 The costs that don't make the ad (interest, insurance, maintenance)4:10 The battery decides — the 80% line5:34 Who should still buy new6:30 The rule, in one sentence Our assumptions (stated on screen in the video) New EV: $42,000 Used, 3 years old, 30,000 miles: $21,500 5-year hold; new car resale $18,000; used car resale $11,500 Interest over 60 months: $7,800 new, $4,900 used Insurance delta: $350/year against the new car Maintenance delta: $1,000 over 5 years against the used car Replacement pack: $14,000 Warranty: 8 years / 100,000 miles, 70% capacity floor No federal or state EV credit assumed Energy cost excluded: identical for both cars, so it cannot change the comparison Change any assumption and the break-even percentage moves. The method doesn't. The rule from the videoAsk for state of health in writing before you sign. 80% or better, with at least three years of warranty left: buy used. Anything less: buy new, or walk away. DisclaimerThis content is educational only and is not financial, tax, or investment advice. Figures are illustrative and based on the assumptions listed above.
