He built his name on the UK underground before his 2006 debut album This Is My Demo landed a Mercury Prize shortlist and widespread critical acclaim, and he became the first unsigned British rapper to win a MOBO Award. He founded his own label, Dcypha Productions, and has collaborated with everyone from Kaiser Chiefs and Ed Sheeran to Lupe Fiasco, featuring as the only guest rapper on Fiasco’s US number one album Lasers. Level Up was released through All Around The World on 8 April 2012 as the second single from Sway’s third album, The Deliverance, and became his highest-charting single, reaching number 8 on the UK Singles Chart, number 3 on the UK Hip Hop and R&B Chart, and number 8 in Scotland. It features the uncredited vocals of singer Kelsey McHugh on its soaring hook. The track first aired on 8 February 2012 when BBC Radio 1’s Zane Lowe made it his Hottest Record in the World, and the official video followed on 2 March 2012. The single was produced by Flux Pavilion (Joshua Steele), the Circus Records co-founder and dubstep heavyweight behind Bass Cannon, whose track I Can’t Stop was famously sampled by Jay-Z and Kanye West on Watch the Throne. The two connected after Sway messaged Flux on Facebook and found the producer was already a fan — within weeks they were in the studio together.
