#TrueCrime #PoliceInterrogation #Florida On July 16, 2018, 30-year-old hairstylist Jesse Sumler disappeared from contact in Jacksonville, Florida. Known for his vibrant personality and drag performances, Jesse was a beloved member of the local LGBTQ community. Two days later, his mother asked apartment management to check on him. What they discovered was horrifying. Jesse had been stabbed up to 18 times, and his throat had been slashed. Investigators found evidence of a violent struggle, but several of his belongings were missing, including his wallet, credit cards, shoes, and car. On July 19, Jesse's 2006 Chevrolet Impala was found abandoned and burned. Whoever had taken it appeared to have tried to destroy potential evidence. But investigators soon uncovered another trail. Jesse's stolen credit cards had been used repeatedly while his body remained undiscovered. ATM and store surveillance footage captured a man making purchases and withdrawals. After police released the images, an anonymous tip identified the man as Omar Antonio Lewis. On August 2, 2018, Omar was arrested and brought in for questioning. Initially facing charges related to auto theft, credit card theft, and fraud, he was already the prime suspect in Jesse's murder. During the interrogation, Omar claimed he had only recently learned that police were looking for him after a friend alerted him to images circulating online. He struggled to explain how he obtained Jesse's car and repeatedly avoided identifying the person he claimed had given it to him. But detectives had much more than surveillance footage. Investigators confronted Omar with evidence linking him to the crime scene, including fingerprints, footprints, and DNA. They also showed him evidence from Jesse's apartment, where his DNA had been recovered. When detectives asked how his DNA and fingerprints ended up there, Omar continued to deny knowing anything about the murder. In June 2019, Omar was formally indicted on first-degree murder charges. More than five years later, as his trial approached in October 2024, he accepted a plea deal, pleading guilty to second-degree murder. In exchange, the remaining charges, including arson and credit card fraud, were dropped. The agreement spared him the death penalty, but the judge sentenced him to life in prison. This video presents the available police interrogation footage and case information in a documentary-style format, following the investigation, Omar's changing explanations, the forensic evidence presented by detectives, and the eventual legal outcome.
