元: One Beginning, Many Words, the Logic Explained

What connects vitality, stubbornness, play, and a crown? This video follows one meaning—beginning—through the Chinese character 元, the words it forms, and the characters it helps build. We begin with 元旦 (New Year's Day), the first ranks, the Yuan dynasty, and 元氣: the primordial vital force behind the familiar Japanese greeting 元気ですか. Then we explore 完, 院, 浣, 頑, 玩, 貦, and 冠 through the same starting idea. Why can 頑 describe both stubbornness and tenacity? Why was 玩, “play,” associated with neglecting one's duties—and how can that same freedom open the way to creativity? And how does 冠, a cap, come to mean first?
