Wandering along the 'North Bank' of the River Thames along the 'Thames Path' in the city of London on a sunny summer Sunday afternoon in August, starting at the Tower of London, passing through St Katherines Docks, and ending at St Pauls Cathedral. The walk starts in front of the main entrance to the world famous 'Tower of London', the magnificent castle sitting proud in the centre of the city of London with it's ancient main tower that was built by 'William the Conqueror' in 1070 almost a thousand years ago and still stands strong to this day. The 'Tower of London' has a long and famous past, having been used as fortress and royal residence to the Kings and Queens of England, as well as jail and armoury and storage house to the most precious 'Crown Jewels'. We walk past 'Traitors Gate', where once important prisoners were brought into the tower, some never to leave it again. Today open to the public, the 'Tower of London' is one of London's most iconic landmarks and listed as a 'World Heritage Site'. Passing by the 'Tower' and also the 'Tower Bridge' to the right, we then head on to St Katherine Docks, Central London's only Marina, home to many fantastic boats and ships of the sea as well being a 'tranquil oasis' that is a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of the popular tourist areas that surround it. A working marina dockyard, St Katherine Docks is also filled with many fine dining and drinking establishments, most special being the famous 'The Dickens Inn', a fine 18th century traditional English Pub of many floors that is well worth popping into for welcome refreshment. After circling the St Katherine Docks, we head out and pass the north side of the Tower of London. From here we get a different view of the grand castle, this time seeing the outer walls and the wide moat that once protected the inner tower from attack. We then leave the tower behind us and turn onto the 'Thames Path', heading west along the 'North Bank' of the River Thames. From this side of the river we get views of the 'South Bank' of the river, with it's famous landmarks such as the 'Shard' towering off in the distance. As we continue along we see the retired navy ship HMS Belfast moored to the south bank, which is now open a museum open to the public. Moored next to HMS Belfast we get a sight of the Indian Navy frigate F44 'Tabar', an active warship visiting London while on duty far from home. Following on along the Thames Path we come to the 'Millennium Bridge', a pedestrian foot bridge that spans the river between the towering 'Tate Modern' art gallery on the South Bank and the iconic St. Paul's Cathedral on the North Bank. It is here we turn away from the river and head towards our final destination of St. Paul's Cathedral, London's beloved and magnificent cathedral designed and built by Sir Christopher Wren in 1675, after the original much older cathedral that originally stood in it's place was destroyed by the 'Great Fire of London' in 1666. We circle first through the gardens and the graveyards that surround the east end of the Cathedral, before ending our journey at the massive steps of the grand entrance to the Cathedral on the west side.
