The hamlet of Kitters Green was once quite separate from the village of Abbots Langley, 100 metres to the north east. The 1851 census shows that it had a population of 127 with two large houses, one farm and 23 scattered cottages and sheds close to the Manor House.
Imagine the area at the turn of the 20th century. The green as we know it now was largely made up of a pond with a path or causeway going through and around it. Much of the rest of the green would have been covered with laundry hung out to dry.
