Both replace damaged joint surfaces, but they work differently.
🔵 Anatomical total shoulder replacement: The ball and socket stay in their natural positions. It generally requires a functioning rotator cuff to help move and stabilize the shoulder.
🟢 Reverse shoulder replacement: The ball and socket switch positions, allowing the deltoid—the large muscle covering your shoulder—to do more of the work lifting your arm. It’s often used for an irreparable rotator cuff tear, certain fractures, or other complex shoulder conditions.
💪 Which exercises matter most?
Both recoveries involve protecting healing tissues, gradually restoring movement, and rebuilding strength.
With an anatomical replacement, rotator cuff strengthening becomes part of rehab when cleared. With a reverse replacement, gradual deltoid and shoulder blade strengthening are key.
Your surgery date alone doesn’t tell you which exercises you’re ready for. Tendon repairs, healing, movement quality, and your surgeon’s restrictions all matter.
Save this video—and ask your rehab team which type of replacement you have and what you’re cleared to do next.
