Nestled along the tranquil waters of the Huanhua Stream in western Chengdu, the Du Fu Thatched Cottage Museum stands as a revered cultural shrine honoring Du Fu (712–770 AD), widely hailed as China’s "Poet-Sage" (Shi Sheng). Writing during the tumultuous transition of the Tang Dynasty around the An Lushan Rebellion, Du Fu crafted verses marked by profound compassion for common people, sharp historical realism, and unmatched mastery of classical poetic forms. Seeking refuge from warfare, he arrived in Chengdu in 759 AD and built a modest thatched cottage, spending nearly four prolific years here composing over 240 of his most celebrated poems, including the poignant "My Thatched Cottage Was Torn Apart by Autumn Winds."
Today, the museum spans an expansive classical garden that seamlessly merges historic relics with lush Sichuan landscape design. A walking tour winds through winding paths shaded by towering bamboo groves, tranquil lotus ponds, and ancient cypress trees.
Key highlights of the museum:
🏡 The Reconstructed Thatched Cottage: A meticulous recreation of the poet's rustic, mud-walled dwelling, offering an evocative window into his simple, meditative daily life.
📜 The Grand Hall of Poetry (Shi Shi): A stately central hall showcasing evocative relief sculptures and paintings depicting Du Fu’s life journeys, sorrows, and literary milestones.
🏛️ The Memorial Tablet Pavilion: A quiet glade housing the historic Shaoling Thatched Cottage stele inscribed during the Qing Dynasty, honoring the site’s enduring legacy.
🪴 Bonsai Garden & Plum Blossom Pavilion: A classical sanctuary displaying centuries-old penjing (bonsai) artistry, winding rockeries, and blooming seasonal flora.
🏺 Tang Dynasty Archaeological Site: An excavation area displaying preserved building foundations, ceramics, and relics unearthed directly on the grounds, confirming the Tang-era roots of the poet's residence.
Walking through this poetic haven invites visitors into a rare world of quiet contemplation, where literary history, classical architecture, and bamboo-lined tranquility come together.
