Tesla's new Roadster can actually fly. So I grabbed a napkin and worked out for how long: about nine seconds. That's nearly as long as the Wright brothers' first flight in 1903, and we all know where those twelve seconds led.
On October 15, 2026, at SpaceX's rocket test site in McGregor, Texas, Tesla finally showed the new Roadster. It hung upside down from a ramp, flipped through the air, and hopped over a Tesla Semi. In this episode we take it apart, piece by piece. How does a fan hold a car on the ceiling? What's in those carbon-fibre air tanks, and how do you build one? Can cold-gas thrusters really make a car fly? Then we do the math.

🧮 THE NAPKIN MATH (our estimates, not Tesla's)
• Tank pressure: 250 kg of air in 600 L ≈ 440 bar (real-gas air at 20 °C), about 180× a car tyre and deeper-than-the-Titanic ocean pressure
• Exhaust speed of cold air ≈ 600 m/s, so full power (80+ kN) burns ≈ 130 kg of air per second and the tank is empty in ≈ 2 s
• Hover (assuming a 1,800 kg car): ≈ 18 kN of thrust → ≈ 30 kg/s → ≈ 9 s (range 7.6–10.7 s for 500–700 m/s)
• 0–60 mph in 0.81 s ≈ 3.4 g average; 0.59 s ≈ 4.6 g
• Refilling 250 kg of air to 440 bar: ≥ 36 kWh with a perfect compressor, ~70 kWh with a real one
Tesla hasn't published the car's weight; ours is a labelled guess. The Rocket's thruster layout and the internal layout in our 3D model are illustrative.
