In 1494, Portugal and Castile divided the non-European world with a line 370 leagues west of Cape Verde, and a pope's bull set the stage. This is the full story of the Treaty of Tordesillas: why Brazil speaks Portuguese while most of South America speaks Spanish, who refused to recognise the line, and why nobody could even measure it.
We put the treaty through three tests: why a pope got to draw it, whether anyone could find it at sea, and what happened when France, England and the Netherlands said no. From Cabral's 1500 landfall to the Treaty of Zaragoza and the Treaty of Madrid, here is how a line in the Atlantic reached so far.
