Pembrey - the forest and the beach

We’re starting to get really excited about our forthcoming move. And so, because the sunshine promised to put in a late September appearance, we decided to head to the coast and explore what will be right on our doorstep in a few months’ time. Pembrey Country Park – the council-run visitor and recreation area – is one of Carmarthenshire’s true treasures, however most of today’s route saw us following tracks through Pembrey Forest. The latter is a much larger pine woodland managed by Natural Resources Wales. We had been hoping to join Cefn Sidan beach at its far western end, however the Ministry of Defence owns the land immediately behind and prohibits access to and from the beach at that point (although the beach itself is open to the public). After enjoying our picnic lunch on a collapsible ‘bench’, we took a closer look at three of the many shipwrecks which litter this vast sandy estuary.
