For the second week in a row, we headed to Gower peninsula for our long hike with a planned 30km circular from Rhossili. After seven-and-a-half years of relatively easy walking in Central Algarve followed by me breaking my arm as soon as we were back in Wales, we are very aware we’re not yet ‘Welsh fit’. And, of course, we hadn’t considered things likely to slow us down, like steep, muddy descents – made very slippery by rain and cows – high stiles and, most challenging of all, enormous fields of enormous corn. Ultimately, we headed inland at Horton instead of our planned turning point of Oxwich Bay and clocked up 23km instead of 30km. Not a bad distance, but we felt a little disappointed with ourselves. Harri has written two hiking books which cover Gower peninsula: Carmarthen Bay & Gower: Wales Coast Path Official Guide: Tenby to Swansea Carmarthen Bay & Gower: Circular Walks Along the Wales Coast Path. Both are published by Northern Eye and available to buy online.
