Dates taste incredibly sweet, so it seems obvious that they should send your blood sugar soaring. But when researchers actually tested dates in people, the results were more complicated than their sweetness suggests.
In this video, we break down what dates really do to your blood sugar. You’ll learn how their carbohydrates affect glucose, why different date varieties can produce different responses, what the glycemic index actually tells you, and why portion size can completely change the real-world picture.
We also look at human research involving people with type 2 diabetes, including a 12-week study of daily date consumption. The results reveal an important distinction: dates did not significantly worsen blood-sugar control in that study, but they did not significantly improve it either.
The takeaway isn’t that dates are harmless, dangerous, or a treatment for diabetes. What matters is understanding three things: Type, Amount, and Context.
Your tongue can tell you a date is sweet. It can’t tell you exactly what your blood sugar will do next.
