In this talk and guided meditation, recorded during our 09.26.26 online Sangha, we explore the subtle signals of early fall, and what they can teach us about sensing what's here in our own lives and trusting our bodies to guide a wise response.
Early fall is a season of small shifts: a few days of rain, a cooler night, the light slanting a little lower each afternoon. These signals are easy to miss in the rush of a busy life, and yet the whole natural world seems to be leaning in to notice them. This session is an invitation to slow down enough to notice what's already here, within and around us, and to recognize when life is asking us to pause, and when it's calling us forward.
Drawing on nature-based metaphor and the embodied wisdom of mindfulness practice, this session weaves together "mushroom vision" from the forests of Vancouver Island, the salmon waiting at the river mouths for the fall rains, and the migratory birds who set out while the signal to go is still a whisper.
The talk includes:
🌿 Mindfulness as a kind of "mushroom vision": learning to see what was there all along
🌿 The salmon's wisdom of pausing, and the difference between avoiding a challenge and waiting for the conditions to support meeting it
🌿 The migratory birds' trust in a call toward what they cannot yet see
🌿 Why we so often wait for a whisper to become a shout
🌿 Befriending the body's sense-based intelligence as a practice we build over time
The guided meditation invites you to settle into the flow of sensation and listen for the particular language of your own sensing. It then asks you to remember a time your body knew something before your mind did, and finally to sense the wider landscape of your life and ask how this season is guiding you. It closes with "The Wild Geese" by Wendell Berry.
May this practice support you in noticing the subtle signals of your own season, and in trusting a wise response to arise from there. If it resonates, you're warmly invited to join my online sangha or courses, where we practice in community: https://www.forestfloormindfulness.com
