Today I took a trip to the Rironi–Mau Summit Highway construction site to see for myself how Kenya’s massive new 233-kilometre highway is taking shape. This was a particularly cold day, but the construction activity made the trip worth it. I got to see sections where the ground has already been graded, backfilled and compacted, while drainage works are already substantially complete in many areas. I also came across the commemorative stone marking the launch of the project by President William Ruto, who officially launched the Rironi–Mau Summit highway project in November 2025. The new highway is being developed as a major upgrade of the existing A8 corridor, with different sections designed as four-lane and six-lane carriageways. The project is intended to improve traffic flow, road safety and connectivity along one of Kenya's most important transport corridors linking Nairobi with the Rift Valley and beyond. And there's another major change coming: this will be a toll road. KeNHA has confirmed a toll rate of KSh 8 per kilometre for the applicable sections. For heavy trucks, the final charging structure is different and the exact tariff has not yet been publicly confirmed, so I won't guess at the figure. During my visit, I also noticed a white geosynthetic material being placed in parts of the road construction area. I asked about it and was told it helps prevent moisture from rising from the ground — another interesting detail I discovered while walking around the site. From massive earthworks and drainage channels to areas already being prepared for the future road surface, this visit gave me a chance to see the project from the ground rather than just through news reports and aerial footage. So how far has the Rironi–Mau Summit Highway actually progressed? Come with me and let's see what is happening on the ground. 🇰🇪 📍 Rironi–Mau Summit Highway 🛣️ 233 km highway project 🏗️ Construction progress 🚧 Earthworks, grading & compaction 💧 Drainage works 🇰🇪 Kenya infrastructure development 🎥 4K exploration If you enjoy exploring Kenya, checking out major infrastructure projects and seeing how our cities, towns and highways are changing, subscribe and join me for the next journey. #RironiMauSummit #Kenya #KenyaRoads #HighwayConstruction #Rironi #MauSummit #NairobiNakuruHighway #KenyaInfrastructure #RoadConstruction #4KWalk #ExploreKenya
