I Didn’t Put You There — Joshua E. Stone It’s amazing sometimes how an old memory will find its way into a song. I was reading Judges 10 and came to the account of Israel crying unto the LORD in their trouble. They had chosen other gods, and the LORD answered: “Go and cry unto the gods which ye have chosen; let them deliver you in the time of your tribulation.” — Judges 10:14 Those words brought an old memory back to me—one of those moments from the past that suddenly looks different when the Word of God shines its light on it. Sometimes we ask God why He seems distant, or why He isn’t where we want Him to be, without stopping to consider what we may have allowed to stand between us and Him. Israel finally came to the place where they stopped defending what they had chosen: “And they put away the strange gods from among them, and served the LORD…” — Judges 10:16 That is where this song, “I Didn’t Put You There,” comes from. There have been things in my life that I chose, places I went, and priorities I allowed to become more important than they should have been. Looking back, I cannot blame God for the distance those choices created. He didn’t put those things there or more to the point He didn't put me there...I did. And perhaps the most important thought in the song is this: You know when I want You the most—There’s nothing standing between us. My prayer is that this song will cause someone to stop and ask the same question I had to ask myself: Is there something standing between me and God that He didn’t put there? — Joshua E. Stone
