1 Timothy 3:15 caused me to think about my behavior in the House of God: “But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.” This song is not about looking down the pew and deciding how someone else ought to dress, worship, or behave. I don’t want to try to be someone else’s Holy Spirit. God’s Word needs to examine me. How do I come before the Lord? How do I speak? How do I walk? What does my appearance communicate? Am I drawing attention to myself, or am I pointing attention toward Him? Could something in my conduct bring reproach upon the name of the Lord I profess to serve? The clothes we wear cannot make a sinful heart right, and the finest garment cannot turn darkness into light. But if there is reverence for God within the heart, shouldn’t that reverence affect something outwardly as well? The Bible says: 1 Timothy 3:15 — “…that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God…” Ecclesiastes 5:1 — “Keep thy foot when thou goest to the house of God, and be more ready to hear…” 1 Corinthians 10:31 — “Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.” Colossians 3:23 — “And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;” Titus 2:10 — “…that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things.” The question isn’t, “What is someone else wearing?” The question isn’t even, “What will others think of me?” The question is: Lord, how ought I to behave myself before Thee? And perhaps the most searching question of all: Not looking down the pew, Lord—What dost Thou see in me?
