In the spring of 1348, a guard at a Tuscan town gate did not ask travelers for a toll; he asked where they had come from, and if the answer was Pisa the gate stayed shut. That was not panic or superstition. It was a rule, written down, voted on and enforced. This video follows a town from the first rumor to the long aftermath, using the documents people actually left behind. News often traveled faster than the disease, so councils had weeks to argue about what to do. You will read what Pistoia's council decided in 1348: no travel to Pisa or Lucca, no visitors from them, a ban on used linen and wool cloth, hard rules for butchers, limits on funeral crowds, and an order that church bells not be rung for the dead, because the constant ringing frightened the living.
