Imprisoned in 1962 and sentenced to life in 1964, he walked free in 1990 after 27 years in prison, then led the nation that had jailed him.
This is the full story of Nelson Mandela.
He was born into a royal house to advise kings, then ran away from an arranged marriage. He became a lawyer in Johannesburg, joined the fight against apartheid, and went underground. He was arrested, tried at Rivonia and sent to Robben Island. From prison he refused a conditional release, and he walked free in 1990. In 1994 he became president, and after one term he stepped down.

HOW WE TELL IT
This is history, told in our own words. The scenes are cinematic recreations. Real photographs are shown as evidence, and recreations of real events carry a RECONSTRUCTION label. The armed struggle is covered neutrally: the Truth and Reconciliation Commission found abuses on all sides.
