On June 12, 1964, a courtroom in Pretoria sentenced a 45-year-old man to life in prison. The state believed it had buried him. It had no idea what it had just begun. His name was Nelson Mandela. Born on July 18, 1918, in the village of Qunu in South Africa's Eastern Cape, the Thembu royal family gave him a name that means trouble — Rolihlahla. Pulling the branch of a tree. A troublemaker. At 23 he ran away to Johannesburg and found his cause, helping found the ANC Youth League in 1944. He led the Defiance Campaign of 1952, opened the country's first black law firm with Oliver Tambo, and when the government banned his movement after Sharpeville, he went underground — the "Black Pimpernel," building Umkhonto we Sizwe, the Spear of the Nation. Captured in 1962, he faced the death penalty at the Rivonia trial — and stood to say he was prepared to die for a free and democratic society. The judges spared his life. The sentence was life in prison. For 27 years he endured a 7-by-8-foot cell on Robben Island, the blinding lime quarry, one censored letter every six months. He refused freedom when it came with conditions. Outside, his name grew into a legend — sung in stadiums, chanted by millions, watched by 600 million at the 1988 Wembley birthday concert. Secret talks with his jailers. A new president, F.W. de Klerk. And on February 11, 1990, the prison gates swung open and Mandela walked free — fist raised, the whole world watching. Then the harder road: holding a nation back from civil war, sharing the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize with de Klerk, winning South Africa's first free election in April 1994. The rainbow nation. The 1995 Rugby World Cup. One term — then he stepped down, because power would not own him. Buried alive at 45. President at 75. It always seems impossible until it is done.
