Broward County officials are demanding a deeper review of spending at the Broward Sheriff’s Office as a budget approaching $900 million becomes the center of an escalating fight over transparency, oversight and control. On October 12, Broward County Mayor Mark Bogen and other county officials went to the Broward Sheriff’s Office headquarters seeking access to the facility. They arrived with county property records — but were not allowed inside. That confrontation comes as county leaders push for a closer examination of BSO spending under Sheriff Gregory Tony, including questions surrounding a training and wellness facility that officials say rose tens of millions of dollars above its original estimate. But this story is more complicated than a missing-money headline. There is currently no public finding that $870 million was stolen or disappeared, and there is no finding that Sheriff Gregory Tony personally misappropriated hundreds of millions of dollars. The dispute centers on how Broward County’s sheriff budget is being spent, what previous audits revealed, how project costs increased, and how much oversight county commissioners can exercise over an independently elected sheriff. And then another investigation entered the picture. Sheriff Tony has cited an ongoing investigation by Florida’s Office of Statewide Prosecution involving Broward County commissioners as a reason for limiting certain interactions. The commissioners deny wrongdoing, and an investigation does not establish guilt. That distinction is where this story really begins. TIMESTAMPS 00:00 Why were Broward County officials blocked from BSO headquarters? 00:46 What does the $870 million figure actually represent? 01:41 The training center that became the center of the dispute 02:48 Why Broward County wants a deeper spending audit 03:55 Sheriff Gregory Tony says BSO has already been audited 05:02 The separate state investigation involving county officials 06:10 Who actually controls the Broward Sheriff’s Office? 07:16 County officials arrive at BSO headquarters 08:13 Why owning the building doesn’t automatically mean controlling it 09:08 Could this fight end up in court? 10:01 What has — and has NOT — been established 10:48 The real battle behind Broward County’s $870M dispute THE STORY Broward County approved a sheriff’s budget approaching $900 million for the 2026–27 fiscal year while county leaders continued demanding greater detail about spending and major capital projects. One focus is the Broward Sheriff’s Office Research, Development and Training Center. County officials have questioned its rising costs and amenities including wellness facilities. Sheriff Gregory Tony argues that BSO has already undergone financial oversight and says his office has nothing to hide. County officials argue the information available still does not answer their questions about current spending decisions. The dispute escalated when Mayor Mark Bogen and other officials physically went to BSO headquarters and were denied access. THIS VIDEO BREAKS DOWN: What Broward County’s $870M spending review actually means Why BSO’s approved budget is closer to $885M Why the training center became controversial What previous Broward Sheriff audits already disclosed Why Sheriff Gregory Tony halted certain negotiations What the statewide investigation involving commissioners actually establishes Why county officials were denied access to BSO headquarters Whether Broward County could take the fight to court IMPORTANT CONTEXT No public finding establishes that $870 million was stolen, missing or fraudulently spent. Sheriff Gregory Tony has not been publicly found to have personally misappropriated the $870 million discussed in this dispute. Likewise, the existence of an investigation involving Broward County commissioners does not establish that any commissioner committed a crime. The headline is only where the story starts. What do you think? Should county officials funding a sheriff’s office have unrestricted access to its spending records and facilities — or should an independently elected sheriff maintain greater operational independence?
