Today, I'll show you how to solve a very common type of organic chemistry exam question: identify the functional groups in a molecule, then give the hybridization of the labeled atoms. We practice both skills on three real drugs.
In this video:
Quick review: steric number to sp3, sp2, or sp
Molecule 1, rilpivirine: nitrile, alkene, amines, aromatic rings
Primary, secondary, and tertiary amines: count the carbons on the nitrogen
Hidden hydrogens: a saturated carbon showing fewer than 4 bonds has hidden H's
Molecule 2, acenocoumarol: ketone, ester, nitro group, and enol vs alcohol
Molecule 3, phenacetin: ether vs ester, amide vs amine
Your turn: try it yourself, then check the answer
The recipe: a step-by-step method you can use on any exam molecule
