[Время, вперёд!]] is a symphonic suite composed by Georgy Sviridov in 1965 for the eponymous film directed by Mikhail Shveitser and Sofiya Milkina. The film was based on Valentin Katayev’s 1932 novel, which chronicled the construction of the Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works during the first five-year plan. Sviridov’s task was to capture the "pulse of the epoch"—the relentless, driving energy of industrialization and the perceived forward motion of the socialist project. The suite consists of six movements, but it is the finale, also titled "Time, Forward!", that achieved legendary status. Characterized by its driving ostinato, heavy brass accents, and a relentless "motoric" rhythm, the piece became a musical personification of the "Thaw" era’s optimism, scientific progress, and the Soviet Space Race. While the film depicts the 1930s, the music is distinctly 1960s in its avant-garde energy and symphonic scale. The piece is most famously recognized across the former Soviet Union as the opening theme for the main evening news program, Vremya (Time). It was first adopted by the program in 1968. Because the news was broadcast daily across all time zones of the USSR, the frantic, ticking rhythm of Sviridov’s score became the definitive "sound of the state." Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, the theme was briefly replaced by more "modern" electronic compositions as the government sought to distance itself from Soviet aesthetics.
