🖌 Paint a fig leaf in watercolour using layered greens, pale veins, and the loose, dancing brush marks of scumbling.
In this real-time lesson, I build the leaf through broken washes and successive layers, preserving small spaces of white paper for light and texture. Towards the end, I add brown accents to suggest the leaf’s drying edges.
We explore:
• Preparing sections with water before adding colour
• Comparing wet-in-wet washes with direct painting
• Leaving white gaps and pale veins
• Building depth with repeated layers
• Scumbling with small taps and broken marks
• Lifting selected vein details
• Adding yellow and brown accents
Alongside the painting, I share thoughts about using the art materials we already have and considering the environmental choices within our practice.
