*When Doing Right Costs You | Genesis 39:7–23*
*GENESIS: The Life of Joseph — God Meant It for Good*
What do you do when obeying God actually makes life harder?
We often expect doing the right thing to produce the right results.
Tell the truth—and people will respect you.
Stay faithful—and things will work out.
Resist temptation—and life will get easier.
But sometimes *doing right costs you.*
Joseph has already lost his home and freedom. Yet in Genesis 39, things finally seem to be improving. Potiphar trusts him. Responsibility has been placed into his hands. The LORD is with him.
Then temptation comes.
Joseph refuses Potiphar's wife—not merely because getting caught would be dangerous, but because he understands what sin really is:
*“How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?” — Genesis 39:9*
Joseph does what is right.
And instead of being rewarded, *he ends up in prison.*
Join us this Sunday as we continue through the life of Joseph and discover how to face temptation, why some decisions need to be made before temptation arrives, and how to trust God when obedience costs more than we expected.
*THIS WEEK'S MESSAGE*
*1️⃣ SEE TEMPTATION FOR WHAT IT IS*
Genesis 39:7–9
Joseph doesn't merely ask:
*“What will happen if I get caught?”*
He sees temptation from God's perspective.
Sin isn't simply breaking a rule, damaging our reputation, or making a poor decision.
Joseph says:
*“How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?”*
The strongest reason to say no to temptation isn't merely fear of consequences.
*It's that God matters more.*
*2️⃣ DECIDE BEFORE TEMPTATION DECIDES FOR YOU*
Genesis 39:10–12
Potiphar's wife doesn't ask once.
*“…she spake to Joseph day by day…”*
Temptation can be persistent.
Joseph refuses to listen. He refuses to stay around. And when the moment comes when there is nothing left to discuss—
*Joseph runs.*
Some decisions are much easier to make before the pressure arrives.
Don't wait until temptation has you cornered to decide whether God is worth obeying.
*3️⃣ TRUST GOD WHEN OBEDIENCE COSTS*
Genesis 39:12–23
Joseph runs from sin—and loses his coat again.
He's falsely accused.
Potiphar becomes angry.
Joseph is thrown into prison.
From the outside, doing the right thing appears to have made Joseph's life worse.
But Genesis 39 isn't finished.
*“But the LORD was with Joseph…” — Genesis 39:21*
The chapter began with Joseph serving in Potiphar's house.
It ends with Joseph sitting in prison.
But one thing hasn't changed:
*THE LORD IS STILL WITH JOSEPH.*
Obedience does not guarantee an easy life.
But whatever obedience costs you, *God is still worthy of your faithfulness.*
*WHAT CAN WE LEARN?*
*Duty — Stay faithful to God, whatever it costs.*
*Person — Become someone who values God above everything else.*
*Goal — Live for God's purposes wherever He places you.*
Joseph's story also points us beyond Joseph.
We may admire Joseph for resisting temptation—but none of us has perfectly resisted sin.
**We need more than a good example.
We need a Saviour.**
Jesus Christ faced temptation and remained completely without sin. And the perfectly righteous Son of God was falsely accused, rejected and condemned.
He willingly went to the cross, not for His own sins, but **for ours**.
He died.
He was buried.
*And He rose again.*
The Gospel isn't:
*“Try harder to be like Joseph.”*
The Gospel is:
*JESUS CHRIST SAVES SINNERS.*
And the grace that saves us is the grace that enables us to live faithfully for Him.
Maybe obedience to God is costing you something right now.
Maybe doing the right thing hasn't produced the outcome you expected.
Joseph's story reminds us:
**Faithfulness is still worth it.
God is still with you.
And your present circumstances are not the end of the story.**
