*Sunday Service Livestream |* When God Brings Up Your Past | Genesis 42 *GENESIS: The Life of Joseph — God Meant It for Good* Have you ever done something you wished you could forget? Something you said. A decision you made. Someone you hurt. Maybe nobody else knows. Maybe years have passed. *But what happens when the past comes back?* In Genesis 42, Joseph's brothers travel to Egypt searching for food during a devastating famine. They have no idea that the powerful Egyptian ruler standing before them is the brother they sold into slavery more than twenty years earlier! They thought Joseph was gone. Their secret was buried. *But God wasn't finished with their story.* As Joseph tests his brothers, their guilty consciences begin to awaken. *“We are verily guilty concerning our brother...” — Genesis 42:21* This chapter isn't simply about guilt. It's about a God who confronts sin, awakens the conscience, and graciously works towards repentance and restoration. Join us this Sunday as we discover why facing the truth about our past can be the beginning of freedom. THIS WEEK'S MESSAGE *1️⃣ THE PAST CAUGHT UP (Genesis 42:1–17)* Joseph's brothers arrive in Egypt desperate for food. They bow before Joseph, fulfilling the dreams they once hated—but they don't recognise him. The brother they rejected now holds their future in his hands. *You may hide something from others, but you cannot hide it from God.* Sometimes the things we want to forget are the very things God wants us to confront. *2️⃣ THE CONSCIENCE SPOKE UP (Genesis 42:18–28)* As their circumstances become frightening, the brothers remember what they did to Joseph. Years have passed, but their guilt hasn't disappeared. *“We are verily guilty concerning our brother...” — Genesis 42:21* A troubled conscience can be painful, but it can also be a mercy when it leads us to acknowledge our sin. *God calls us not merely to feel guilty, but to repent and seek His forgiveness.* *3️⃣ GOD NEVER GAVE UP (Genesis 42:29–38)* The brothers return home with food, but also with fear and unanswered questions. Jacob believes everything is working against him. *“All these things are against me.” — Genesis 42:36* But what Jacob cannot see is that God is still working through circumstances he doesn't understand. *Even when we cannot see what God is doing, His purposes have not failed.* WHAT CAN WE LEARN? *Duty —* Face what God is asking you to confront. *Person —* Become someone honest before God and others. *Goal —* Live in the freedom of Christ's forgiveness. THE GREATER HOPE — JESUS CHRIST Joseph's brothers couldn't undo what they had done. And neither can we erase our own sins. We can make excuses, hide the truth, or try to become better people. *But none of those things can remove our guilt before a holy God.* We need more than a clear conscience. *We need a Saviour.* Jesus Christ, the sinless Son of God, died upon the cross for our sins, was buried, and rose again. Through repentance and faith in Him, we can receive forgiveness and new life. *“If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.” — John 8:36* The Gospel isn't: *“Pretend your past never happened.”* The Gospel is: *JESUS CHRIST CAN FORGIVE YOUR PAST AND CHANGE YOUR FUTURE.* Maybe there's something you've been avoiding. A wrong you've never admitted. Someone you need to seek forgiveness from. A sin you've tried to hide. *Don't run from the truth when God is calling you to face it.* And don't believe your past is greater than God's grace. *Your past may be real. Your guilt may be real.
