From the River to the Clay Oven | Firewood, Fresh Butter & a Traditional Village Meal

Join me in this video for another day of rural and nomadic life in Iran, filled with traditional work, nature, the river, collecting firewood, taking care of farm animals, baking fresh local bread, and preparing a simple and delicious Iranian dish. Early in the morning, I went to the river to collect firewood for cooking, baking bread, and preparing lunch. I gathered the wood in the countryside, broke it into smaller pieces, and brought it home to use for the traditional clay oven and cooking. After bringing the firewood home, I went to take care of the farm animals. Looking after the animals and doing daily chores is an important part of everyday rural life. After that, I prepared the dough for traditional local bread and left it to rise. While the dough was resting, I went to the garden and watered the plants. Then I picked some fresh eggplants for today's lunch. Today's meal was a simple and traditional Iranian dish called Eggplant Borani. This delicious village-style dish is made with grilled eggplant, yogurt, dried mint, and garlic. After picking the eggplants, I started preparing the yogurt. I poured the yogurt into a butter churner and waited for about twenty minutes until the butter separated from the yogurt. I then separated the fresh butter from the buttermilk and set aside some of the yogurt to mix with the eggplant and prepare our lunch. Once everything was ready, I lit my traditional clay oven and started baking fresh local bread. The smell of freshly baked bread next to the clay oven is one of the simple pleasures of rural life. Finally, I prepared the eggplant borani and served it with fresh local bread and freshly made buttermilk. I enjoyed a simple, traditional, and delicious village lunch surrounded by the peaceful countryside.
