Sheikh Abdulbasit Responds Again — The Hidden History Behind Sheikh Mashhood
In this video, Sheikh Dr. Abdulbasit Mashhood Jibril Ramadan Al-Ketuwi responds to several claims concerning his father, Sheikh Mashhood Jibril Al-Ketuwi, and the long-standing disputes surrounding Mudirul Markaz.
Sheikh Abdulbasit recounts an exchange in which, according to his account, his father reminded Mudirul Markaz of the relationship between their fathers. He says Sheikh Mashhood questioned how Mudirul Markaz could speak to him in such a manner, considering that Sheikh Adam Abdullahi Al-Ilory had been his teacher.
According to Abdulbasit, Mudirul Markaz questioned what Sheikh Mashhood possessed or owned, including his properties. Abdulbasit says his father responded by challenging the suggestion that his honour and blessings depended entirely on his association with Sheikh Adam.
The Blessings of Sheikh Mashhood
Sheikh Abdulbasit argues that the blessings and qualities of his father did not begin with Sheikh Adam.
He refers to a statement attributed to Sheikh Professor Ajara Saadullah, who, according to Abdulbasit, explained that Sheikh Mashhood’s upbringing and blessings predated his close association with Sheikh Adam.
He says the two scholars already knew each other and had a relationship rooted in learning and adab before Sheikh Mashhood later became closely associated with Sheikh Adam.
The Black Soap Claim
Sheikh Abdulbasit also responds to a claim concerning his father allegedly using black soap while mentioning the names of Sheikh Adam’s children.
He challenges the interpretation attached to the claim and says that students who lived with Sheikh Mashhood for many years can testify to his conduct.
According to Abdulbasit, those students never witnessed Sheikh Mashhood instructing them to mix anything with black soap, grind materials, or prepare charms or similar substances.
He also gives a personal example concerning traditional medicine, explaining that he himself knew some herbal remedies and that his father would sometimes ask him to prepare or obtain medicine for someone. Abdulbasit recalls joking with his father about this, emphasizing that Sheikh Mashhood was not an expert in every aspect of traditional medicine.
The 1990 Naming Ceremony
Sheikh Abdulbasit further recalls an incident at one of his father's children's naming ceremonies in Iyana-Ipaja around 1990, involving the late Sheikh Shazili Zambou..
According to Abdulbasit, Sheikh Shazili was known for speaking his mind openly. In the presence of some teachers and staff working under Sheikh Mashhood, he reportedly explained why they called Sheikh Mashhood “Oga”, meaning “boss.”
Abdulbasit says Sheikh Shazili claimed that those working under Sheikh Mashhood had attempted spiritual means against him but were unsuccessful. He reportedly challenged anyone present who disagreed with him to come forward and contradict the statement.
Abdulbasit uses this story to argue that Sheikh Mashhood’s authority and reputation should be considered alongside the testimonies of people who personally lived and worked with him.
Responding to Naqeebul-Ashraf
Sheikh Abdulbasit also responds directly to Naqeebul-Ashraf, reminding him of the history between their fathers.
According to Abdulbasit, Sheikh Abdullahi Solati was once a student who worked under Sheikh Mashhood’s supervision. He recalls that his father assisted Sheikh Abdullahi Solati during his student years, including providing clothing and other forms of support.
Abdulbasit says there are many historical events he could recount—stories that some people may not want to hear because they bring back memories of an earlier period.
His central message is that the present generation should not discuss these controversies without acknowledging the relationships, assistance, sacrifices, and history that existed between their fathers before the later disagreements.
This video offers another perspective on the history surrounding Sheikh Mashhood Jibril Al-Ketuwi, Sheikh Adam Abdullahi Al-Ilory, Mudirul Markaz, Sheikh Abdullahi Solati, Naqeebul-Ashraf, and the wider Markaz controversies.
